[GRASS-user] How can I locate points on a river?

Hi all,

I’m trying to identify specific points on the centerline of a river channel by “river mile” , that is, points along a path at specified distances from a starting point — not at regular intervals. Any suggestions how I might go about this?

I’m using GRASS 8.x

Much appreciated…

Tom

Hi Tom:

Will v.segment or v.lrs.segment help?

https://grass.osgeo.org/grass82/manuals/v.segment.html

https://grass.osgeo.org/grass82/manuals/v.lrs.segment.html

You’ll need a start point, and a text file with the distances (along the line) for all additional river miles.

Cheers, Micha

Hi Micha!

Thank you for the suggestion — yes, I think so; I just started looking at v.segment… the capability of GRASS continues to amaze me! Your help is much appreciated!

BTW, on a separate note… did you get my email some time ago about revising the “Flood Forecasting: a global perspective” book? Are you and your colleague interested in making any additions or revisions to your book chapter for the 2nd edition? Others reading this, who may be interested, please contact me!

Thank you again!

Best wishes,
Tom

Me too! Now there is the cloud based actinia to run GRASS modules “close to the data”.

Yes, I did. The lead author is employed privately now, so I doubt he’s interested. I contacted the third author, and did not get a very enthusiastic response. Maybe I’ll reach out to the lead author anyway…

Thank you again!

Best wishes,
Tom
