My personal choice to merge rasters is gdalwarp tool.
It has other power-packed features also.

This may have advantages in some situations. For my purposes, r.patch is
the digital equivalent of taping together two paper maps edge-to-edge. The
source of the data separates the DEM into arbitrary but small chunks for
quicker download for those who need only a small area. One of my projects'
area is across two such chunks.
