I’m having some recent trouble getting Grass to start on Windows XP.
when i try to start Grass i get the following message:
“error setting region (Problem with g.region): child killed:unknown signal”
and then a message box with lots of errors starting with
"cant read “parts(w)”: no such variable
…
…
"
I’ve tried and failed with:
- creating a new grass database directory without spaces in the path (the default is in My Documents but it used to work before);
- unistalling and re-installing Grass
- found some reference to gis_mlock in the archives but did not understand a word of it…
Other info:
- I have Grass 6.3.0
- Used to work until about a week ago
- Only difference since then is that i’ve installed QGIS , also postgis shaepefile loader (not sure if that would cause the trouble, perhaps a different gdal version or something??).
It would be nice to fix this so that I can use Grass commands from QGIS…
Any tips?
Thanks,
Vishal

As i mentioned earlier, Grass6.3 was working earlierwith my own mapsets - but now is not. The only difference since then that i can remember is that I installed Qgis, and started experimenting with postgresql an dpostgis as well…i dont quite see if that could impact Grass runs…but am just guessing here…
Martin, I tried your May 12 Grass 6.5 daily build.
I get the same error regarding g.region. When i try to run it from the command line, it enters grass. but then i cant use d.mon, so i try gis.m and at this point i get the same original error.
is this something to do with the gis manager? I tried to start with wx-python gui but got a different error there.

one more thing Martin: i noticed that the last copy action on installing Grass6.5svn failed. here’s the log extract (first few and last few lines):
Create folder: C:\Documents and Settings\Vishal Mehta\My Documents\GIS DataBase
Output folder: C:\Program Files\GRASS-65-SVN\icons
Extract: GRASS.ico… 100%
Extract: GRASS_Web.ico… 100%
…
…
Create folder: C:\Program Files\GRASS-65-SVN\msys\grass
Copy to C:\Program Files\GRASS-65-SVN\msys\home\C:\Documents and Settings\Vishal Mehta
Copy failed
Completed
