There is an excellent map on the web site's intro page made by overlaying
a translucent topo quad map on a hillslope-shaded DEM. Is the process for
creating such maps somewhere on the site? I'd like to replicate this for
several drainage basins in one of my projects.

You can do this with r.blend to make three (R,G, and B) rasters from a blend of two originals , and then r.composite to recreate the 3 band color raster.
