[GRASS-user] QGIS and GRASS

This is probably a question for the Kyng, but I’ll post it to all.

I have not yet used QGIS. I have been using GRASS 6.1cvs for a while, but am considering either 6.2 or running the 6.3 development binaries as they are released. I am running it on an Intel Mac OSX. What total installation should I use to install and properly run GRASS with QGIS? I tried using the Mac Help text file in the QGIS package (version 0.7.4) to change the library usages, etc. I have installed all of W. Kyngesburye’s libraries, and his version of GRASS 6.3, but could not get a happy result following those instructions.

Should I start over with a fresh GRASS install after a full uninstall? Or is there an easier way?

Thanks!
Brandon

I wasn't able to redirect Qgis 0.7.4 to use my libs (now frameworks). I think 0.7.4 uses an old GDAL (maybe 1.2.6?). And, of course, you'd be out of luck on an Intel Mac - while Qgis might run in Rosetta emulation, pointing it to universal libs (GDAL, if versions agreed, and GRASS) would not work.

How about using Qgis 0.8 preview 2? Both my build and the qgis.org build are universal, and should integrate with a newer GRASS. For a preview it's reasonably stable.

If you have any problems, let me know. I want to make sure it all works smoothly together.

Brandon,

I’m not sure what your exact problem is? Are you trying to get the GRASS plugins working in QGIS? Lorenzo Moretti has a drag/drop script to make needed changes in QGIS to make it run GRASS plugins. However, you must start QGIS from the GRASS prompt for this to work. That is, you have to be running GRASS in order to use the plugins. At least that is how it was the last time I used it a few months back. This may have changed in the new version 8 beta, which I’ve not really tried.

It’s also possible that QGIS will not work with the Mac framework libraries, but I doubt this is the case (except maybe for GDAL).

I've just begun to play in the OS X waters, so I am by no means an
expert, but I am running Kyngesburye's 6.2 GRASS build and
frameworks, and the QGIS 0.7.4 (aka 0.8 preview) on an Intel Mac with
good success. Specifically what problems are you having?

I think Brandon really means 0.7.4. It's not the same thing as 0.8 preview. 0.7.4 is not universal, and is the current release download on the Qgis site. 0.8 Pre download is strangely ONLY in a news item on the main page. Or on my site

William is correct on this (about my using the 0.7.4, not realizing it was not universal) and as soon as I get a chance tomorrow I'll try 0.8 and have a feeling it will be just fine. Thanks Richard and Michael for your input also - I'll be working with this soon.

Cheers to the Kyng!

Thanks all,
B
