hi greg,
yes, QGIS is good - I started with that but, in my stubbornness, decided
to see if I could master GRASS without any 'shortcuts' hehe.. when I
initially set up my GRASS install too, I was actually doing it through a
terminal/command-line... I don't think the GUI / point-and-click option
was fully functional then (a coupla years ago)...The upside of that
method meant it was one-step-at-a-time, and the terminal berated me if I
got something awry like directory, resolution, projection, etc...
if you find something like QGIS that makes your GRASS entry easier, go
for it. About the only 'down' thing I found with QGIS was it took some
time to refresh when I was using some of my high-res pics, whereas this
seemed less of an issue directly in GRASS. But it's probably improved a
lot in last year or so... I'm due to play with it again soon
Cheers,
shane.

Shane,
Thanks. That was much more than two cents' worth. I am playing
around with things now, and the main thing, I think, is eliminating
the spaces in file paths. Also, I have found by accident in the
process of following a tutorial on QGIS that QGIS is a great interface
for working with GRASS.
Thank you for answering my question.
