[GRASS-user] v vol rst super slow

Hi,

I am interpolating 2D data using V Vol RST. After 90 min the process progressed 15%, and I stopped it.
There are approx 370 points, and it should not take this long. I am not sure what I am doing incorrectly. I have set the g.region to match the vector, and joined the vector attribute to the database.

Sorry, my fault: as you are interpolating in 3D we need the 3D region, so the output of 'g.region -3p'.

And could you also provide us with:

- the exact v.vol.rst command line you used
- the output of v.info on your point dataset

?

Hi,
your region settings are interesting.
Do you really need a resolution of 5m in x,y plane and 1m in z direction?
As a result you have 23,507,876,616 voxel to compute, but only 76887
points for interpolation.

I would suggest you reduce the resolution of your region
significantly, at least to test the interpolation settings.

Best regards
Soeren

The current target resolutions of

nsres3: 5
ewres3: 5
tbres: 1

are much too high for the given extents and the coverage of the input points

According to the output of v.info, a point covers on average about 7643645 cubic meters which corresponds to voxels with edge length of about 200 meters. Therefore a good starting point would be a 3D region with resolutions in all 3 dimensions of 200 meter. If the results make sense, the resolutions can be slowly increased.

which output do you select to have a 3D Raster?

You probably want to specify 'elevation' parameter.

These 0 bytes are caused by integer overflow, easy to fix.

The reason is that no output has been specified.

The current target resolutions of

nsres3: 5
ewres3: 5
tbres: 1

are much too high for the given extents and the coverage of the input
points

According to the output of v.info, a point covers on average about 7643645
cubic meters which corresponds to voxels with edge length of about 200
meters. Therefore a good starting point would be a 3D region with
resolutions in all 3 dimensions of 200 meter. If the results make sense, the
resolutions can be slowly increased.

Thank you,

v.vol.rst input=BHMat1All_May12@Toronto wcolumn=cat dmin=5 elevation=may23trial

it would appear to have worked. I changed the resolution to 200 m horizontally and 5 m for z using g.region as a trial.
now the big question is how do you see the data. I am able to view a 2D raster by changing the color scale but 3d raster is blank,

Sorry, my fault: as you are interpolating in 3D we need the 3D region,
so the output of ‘g.region -3p’.

And could you also provide us with:

  • the exact v.vol.rst command line you used
  • the output of v.info on your point dataset

?

What is the resolution of the region ?

You can view it in 3D view, see https://youtu.be/CmK-fEyf2SY or use

to slice it into a series of 2D rasters and view them.

Hi,
So now i am able to run the v.vol.rst (thank you). the 3d raster exists (see below) and shows up in the layer manager. However, i cannot show in the Map Display Window. I have assigned a color table. any ideas how to show the 3D raster with color coding based on the properties?

The current target resolutions of

nsres3: 5
ewres3: 5
tbres: 1

are much too high for the given extents and the coverage of the
input
points

According to the output of v.info <http://v.info>, a point
covers on average about 7643645
cubic meters which corresponds to voxels with edge length of
about 200
meters. Therefore a good starting point would be a 3D region with
resolutions in all 3 dimensions of 200 meter. If the results
make sense, the
resolutions can be slowly increased.

Sorry, my fault: as you are interpolating in 3D we need the
3D region,
so the output of ‘g.region -3p’.

And could you also provide us with:

What is the resolution of the region ?
