Also - compile information fails to include tree locations
of any required "other" sources.

I've been using GRASS for over 10 years. Unfortunately,
I have yet to get a useful compile from the GRASS 5.x efforts.

The PROJ library is no longer an optional dependency. You have to have
PROJ 4.4.6 or later installed on your system in order to build GRASS.

As the standard PROJ distribution now does everything which GRASS
needs, there isn't any reason for GRASS to include its own copy of
this library.

Also - compile information fails to include tree locations
of any required "other" sources.

Can you elaborate?
