In some situations that I don't want to reproduce, a.in.ascii can say:
ERROR: xcol > minimum last column number
which looks dumb, as things being greater than minimum is usually good.
Ah, one can see it with
$ </dev/null v.in.ascii out=mypoints
(but there are other messages.)
