Subject: ecw format
it is possible to see images in ecw format directly in grass, without
converting it to tiff?

It depends whether you GDAL instalation was built with ECW support. If it was you should be able to load ECW images directly into Grass with r.in.gdal.
I guess that the latest FWtools release provides GDAL with an improved ECW driver. And if you really just want to *see* your ECW image use OpenEV shipped together with FWtools.
