GRASS Version: 6.1 2005-11-16
As the title writes.
r.out.gdal is a shell script. It doesn't know it was called by the GUI.

More precisely, it's just a wrapper around gdal_translate, which knows
nothing about the GRASS_MESSAGE_FORMAT variable.
