I have changed default form mode for vector attributes in d.m to GUI,

There was a check box on the vector panel of the GIS Manager to switch to
terminal output. I hope it is still there for those of us for whom form mode
is broken.

It means that nobody will use that or even dicover that possibility and
nobody try to fix it.

I'm OK with setting it to 0 given Radim's reasons and the fact that it can
be also set in g.gisenv (and HOPE that someone can fix this).

for the development version, that's very true!

perhaps look at it this way:
Binary packagers (e.g. on Mac where it is known to break), can apply
whatever patches within the GPL they feel makes for a better package.
[but please make a note somewhere and keep a diff handy]
The "official" CVS source shouldn't deal with bugs by sweeping them
under the carpet, otherwise they never get fixed.
This way general users get a working program and advanced users are
forced to notice it.
