[GRASS5] GRASS 5.0.0 to be released now

Dear developers,

Glynn Clements has tagged "release_30_08_2002_grass5_0_0" for
us, at time the packaging of GRASS 5.0.0 is running (source code
and GNU/Linux-x86 binaries) here.

Tomorrow morning (Central European time) we should have
the stable GRASS 5.0.0 release in our hands!

Every problem reported then may be solved in 5.0.1.

Cheers,

Markus

Sounds good, maybe we should prepare a press release
and a schedule for its release. Okay, first draft:

Trento, 4.9.2002
DRAFT _NOT_ _FOR_ _DISTRIBUTION_

  First stable GRASS 5 release.

Today the GRASS Development team under leadership of Markus Neteler
released the first stable version of the fifths generation of
the famous Free Software Geographic Information System.
The sources of the new 5.0.0 version and further information
can be found on grass.itc.it and several mirrors.

GRASS 5 compared to GRASS 4 represents the first major change
in GRASS functionality in several years, with the most notable
change being support for floating point and null values. GRASS 5 also
has a new and much easier to use windows interface based on Tcl/Tk.
Several beta and pre release of GRASS 5 have been available in the past.
Developers believe that 5.0.0 has proven itself stable enough to
justify a wide audience release.

"This release was long in coming, because the GRASS source code base
is huge.", explains the team coordinator Markus Neteler,
"In the last years GRASS also completely changed the development model
adopting an open volenteer driven process and fully going the
Free Software way."

"This is a milestone release", reveals Professor Helena Mitasova from the
North Carolina State University, "Markus Neteler has successfully coordinated
many developers to undertake this huge endevour. ".

I've copied this sentence from:
  http://grass.itc.it/grass5/index.html
    What's new in GRASS 5.x?

I've copied this sentence from:

    What's new in GRASS 5.x?

This page obviously evolved from a 4.x page... I have fixed that
sentence.
In general above page should be heavily improved for the stable
release and possibly contain a subsection:

"What's not supported in 5.0.0 but will be present in 5.0.1"
- general datum transformation support?
- initial i18N support?
- other changes waiting in CVS HEAD

This may lower potential confusion.

Better call it:
Feature roadmap for future 5.0.x releases:

Hi,

before moving the packages onto the GRASS web site
I were glad if some people could take another look
at the new packages:

http://mpa.itc.it/markus/grass5.0.0/

grass5.0.0_i686-pc-linux-gnu_bin.tar.gz
grass5.0.0_src.tar.gz
nviz_postgresql_i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz
pngdriver24_i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz

The extra 24-bit PNG driver is compiled now against
GD 2.x and PNG.2 *without* hardcoded paths (thanks to
Glynn to explain the tricks to me).

All packages above are generated with my build-script
without manual interaction.

Meanwhile we can renovate the grass5 page and finish the
press release.

Markus

Of course I forgot to copy the install script.
Stay tuned please,

Markus

Is the source-tarball final enough to go into Mandrake contribs
(currently has pre5)? I don't think there is much time for me to work on
this (less than a week), so I would prefer ont to package if it's not
final, Mandrake is frozen solid (release manager approval for apps in
main), but contribs not quite yet. And I may just be able to squeeze gd2 in.

Also, what is the issue with nviz vs postgres? Atm, I am compiling the
Mandrake grass package with everything (nviz, pg, odbc, blas, lapack etc).

Buchan

yes, we won't change anything. I just want to know if my
packaging was correct (not to miss files or whatever could
happen).

Good.

Also, what is the issue with nviz vs postgres? Atm, I am compiling the

The standard package should have NVIZ without postgres. But I have compiled
an extra package (see above) only containing NVIZ with postgres support.

OK, I have compiled nviz with postgres, is there any problem with this
(besides dependency on postgres libs, which we can live with)? I haven't
gotten around to subpackages anyway, which would be the only viable way
to provide with and without postgres support.

OK, downloading source now ...

Having followed the versions so far, I think that this one is the one to
go with. I wonder whether "Grass 5 is a free software, the sources of
which ..." could be: "Grass 5 is free software, released under GNU General
Public License, the sources of which ...", as on the website first
paragraph? Perhaps also instead of: "Grass 5 also runs under Microsoft
Windows (R) ... " - "Grass 5 also runs under Microsoft Windows (R) using
the cygwin tools, ..." to avoid looking like a native port. Isn't OSX also
just Darwin? The rationale for the qualification would be to avoid
disappointing people who might expect more than is on offer.

Agreed.

Personally, I think that the "Windows/Cygwin support" should be
qualified further. It's still somewhat "experimental" (IOW, flaky),
and is likely to remain so until the issues of:

a) spaces in filenames, and
b) using tcltkgrass with Cygwin's Tcl/Tk package

are resolved.
