I have already prepared a Linux/x86 PC binary version (a
magic script does the job).
Before moving the package to the web site, I would ask for
a volunteer to try it first.

Nice, I can try on SuSe 8.0 and 8.1.

Congrats.
From GRASS 5.0.1 released 28 January 2003
its less than three month.

For details see:
http://grass.itc.it/grass5/source/NEWS.html

Would it make sense to write a short release announcement
and send it to places like LWN.net?
The annoucement should shortly explain what GRASS is,
what this version is and when people should upgrade it.
Of course our development line can also be shortly mentioned.

Related things have been updated on the web:
- source code package

BTW: We should keep the released source tarball around for reference somewhere.
Like for 5.0.0 and 5.0.1. That is good practice.
Can you put that up Markus?

I can test on Debian testing.

Right, but the 5.0.1 was pretty useless, just to stimulate
people

Please start from here:

(which could be better. The file is in web CVS)

I don't have the 5.0.0 tarball anymore (but it could be easily extracted
from CVS with tag). The problem is the growing web site, we are already
at > 600MB (I think of CDROMs etc). If someone puts the 5.0.0 tarball into

ftp grass.itc.it
cd incoming

I'll save them into the source tree (5.0.1 I still have, it's back now).

Thanks!

The Linux/x86 PC binary GRASS 5.0.2 package is temporarily here:

Thanks!

The Linux/x86 PC binary GRASS 5.0.2 package is temporarily here:
http://mpa.itc.it/markus/grass502/

Could you also upload the installation script. The old one I still had
lying around gives me an error about wrong file size.

Right, but the 5.0.1 was pretty useless, just to stimulate
people

Still we should archive it for reference purposes.

I don't have the 5.0.0 tarball anymore (but it could be easily extracted
from CVS with tag).

We should try to get a hold of the original one.
Also we should start adding more checksums and gpg signatures on
released tarballs. This would make later integrity checks possible
and be proactive against trojaned tarballs.

You can extract it from the rpm sources from the FreeGIS-CD 1.2.2,
named grass-5.0.0-1.src.rpm.

I'll save them into the source tree (5.0.1 I still have, it's back now).

Great.

Of course - sorry, forgot to upload.

Sounds good. But I need detailed instructions how to do that...

Work in progress...

It is quite okay.

If nobody sends improvements within the next three hours or so
I'll forward this annoucement to lwn.

md5sum calculates checksums, just include the result in a readme.

As for gpg you need to have a keypair for yourself.
The mini Howtos should cover the basic steps.
  http://www.gnupg.org/documentation/index.html
Hints: Make sure you have a gnupg version >=1.0.7.

After doing this, just a
  gpg --detach-sign filename
will create a detached signature that you can distribute
as "filename.sig" along with the tarball.

Compare to how other project do it:
