[GRASS5] GRASS 5 beta4k internal out

Dear developers,

in the internal directory here at Hannover
you find the GRASS 5 beta4k.

new:
- lots of source code structure improvements
  from Bill Hughes,

- m.proj, g.setproj supporting all 121 projections
  now
  from Morten Hulden

- v.in.shape creates dig_cats file now (text attributes)
  (me)

Question: Is it o.k to modify v.digit like this:
  - query user for text attribute (currently it just asks
for the category number, not for category label).

I would like to have such function and could do the job.
What do you think?

Best regards

  Markus Neteler

Greetings Markus (and the rest of the gang),

Well, it looks like we are running into web server problems here
with our ITC group. So it is looking like we will be building our
own new webserver for GRASS called .... grass.baylor.edu.
We'll be moving GRASSnet over to this new server along with
setting up a new area for http AND ftp downloading of all files,
manuals, etc. Also, we'll have a developers area for all of us and
everyone will have their own email and user accounts on this
new web server. Email me with what you want names and
accounts to be called.

Along with your ideas Markus, we will give all developers access
to the main site to update things, as well as set up new personal
areas. So, if I am working on Solaris7 Intel issues , we will point to
http://grass.baylor.edu/solaris7i for example. I am hopeful that we
can get this moving within the next couple of weeks and be on-line
during that timeframe. Everyone let me know your thoughts as this
will be a major undertaking and we'd like all the feedback we can
get to set this up right. Now I just need to see how much capital
we have left to do this with!

Markus, I agree, lets let 5k go. Shall we say Wednesday morning
for coordination purposes? Also, I need from you the 421 that
we talked about for the 43 instables. This would be a great kickoff
for the new server site. Lisa emailed the newest manual set to you.
Did you get a the copies? Let me know. Let's get those out there
also.

Take care everyone,

Bruce

Hi there,

before publishing we shall get in sync following
modules:

r.flow,
r.colors,
r.slope.aspect

Those I received today and I will include them in next beta4l.

s.surf.rst is not o.k. at least for Helena/Bill B.
Here we need clarification. Best thing would be direct
discussion between Helena/Bill B. and Bill H. (by using
this internal list address or directly).

r.contour seems to be o.k. (Helena told me)

r.surf.rst got improvements by Jarom I have heard (it was not working).
Please send the changes over to me for next beta4l.

I already got small updates from Morten on g.setproj and m.proj.

The man-pages (g.manual) have to be checked and partly
updated (using g.html2man). Lisa...?

I suggest to re-check next beta4l again before publishing. This
should be the final beta4 internal before publishing as
"official GRASS 5 beta4".

GRASS 4.2.1 V.22 is there internally. We can call it
"GRASS 4.3 stable" which shall be the final version on the
GRASS 4.x tree. From now onwards there will be no further
support on GRASS 4.x (as GRASS 5 becomes stable).

General problem on GRASS 5 is different results from
- r.stats
- other modules (see knownbugs_oct99.txt for details).

Sometimes I found surprising values in FP obviously due
to quant problems or something else. We have to take
care for this if we want GRASS 5 to become a convincing
system.

Well, I am awaiting final updates for beta4 and publish
internally the final beta4l before the official publish
next week or so.

Bruce: The planned bug-tracking system will be part of
your new server?

Thanks for listening

Markus

Hi all,

I am meeting with the lawyers (again) today regarding licensing.
I am informing them that we will be going with GPL. It's the
best thing for all. They don't really like this, but I am arguing
that this is the best way.

Let's keep this under wraps for the time being with an announcement
maybe tomorrow or the next day. We can put all GRASS versions
under GPL.

I'll post again in a few hours after the meeting.
