Aloha,
1.) Defining what the next GUI needs to be able to do is the very first
prime step.
2.)Taking the results from that the next step needs to be to define the
API: CLI to GUI & GUI-internal.
3.) Then we have to decide on the Toolkit. There might be a couple of
choices for that by then, but one big restraint will be available
programmers.
This is where I throw my hat in. I have worked happily with Qt on Linux
and Windows over the last four years. I have also written a small GUI
mockup demonstrating three different kind of GUI modes in Qt
(http://crischan.net/q1).
Now something else: I wonder if for the upcoming discussions shaping the
future of the GUI we should have a small forum. It's sometimes hard to
keep track of the thread and probably will be more so in the coming
weeks and months. I would offer to set up a CMS (Drupal) with a forum
for general talk to shape general ideas, an article section where
surviving ideas could be described in an single article each and where
people could still comment. Once an idea is ready to be implemented we
could put it into the GUI Devel Diary (online book).
This could keep everything related to this GUI development in one single
place. Maybe an automated forward of post to the site by registered
users might be of interest. I don't want to drop the mailing list, just
want have a focus point for the GUI devel talk.
Anyone else interested?
