I know that there have been internationalization efforts underway with
GRASS. Is it now possible to start it in a different language--specifically
Spanish? If so, how is this done?
Thanks
Michael

You have to set your locale environment to that:
export LANG=es_ES
see also the 'locale' command
then just start grass.
for other langueges see e.g.
http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/aix/aixbman/admnconc/locale.htm

Spanish is not yet there. For weekly translation statistics, see
http://grass.itc.it/devel/i18n.php#statistics
On the same page you can find the related mailing list
which is used to coordinate efforts.

Right now I have simplified it a bit:
Simple:
- you can go here (or a mirror site)
http://grass.itc.it/devel/i18n.php#statistics
- download from the (using the link to CVS) a po file pair
for libs and modules of an already supported language
- load the file into kbabel, poEdit or whatever and
start translating
- Take care to rename it properly and to update the
language specific metadata.
- send it to a GRASS developer for submission
Slightly more complicated, but better in the long run:
- get GRASS 6 source code (CVS snapshot recommended),
update again from CVS to have the latest stuff
- proceed as described on above page or, better, as
described in the locale/README file
Before starting, subscribe to the 'translations' mailing list
(see on above page), and announce your intended work to
avoid duplication.
It's easy, does not need any programming skills but only
time and experience with GRASS on a user level.
Please join the efforts
