to avoid that the code gets lost: I have uploaded the
layered XDRIVER2 into a new /todo section in CVS
(cvs up -dP)
This directory contains
- a new layered XDRIVER2 (fifo)
- a new R_driver2()
- display modules updated to have a new r:g:b color parameter
- d.layers to allow layer management in GRASS Monitor
- the communication between Markus and Pierre on this issue
The diffs are against GRASS 5beta7

Pierre's idea was to implement a XDRIVER supporting maps as
layers (to individually switch them on and off within a GUI).
The d.layers module demonstrates how it works (it does!).
Additionally a new display parameter to control display colors
by r:g:b values have been implemented.
