Hi all,
from Politecnico di Milano, Marco Negretti, I have received an improved
v.to.rast which improves the vector/raster conversion. Find details
below (the presentation contains self-speaking images).
Question is if we update the current v.to.rast with this improved
version (I would say yes...).
The details algorithm description will follow later as it is currently
to be translated into English.
Regards and many thanks to Marco!

Ciao Markus,
I enclose the 'main.c' and an extract, translated in english, from the Trento presentation: i hope it'll be useful to understand the
code.
The presentation is available in italian at

If you need any help, please let me know.

Markus
if it is well tested both for lines and polygons at least byt its author it would be worth replacing.
Are you going to put it into GRASS5.1 ?
Also, we gave you v.to.rast2 which should not be called v.to.rast2 but
rather v.to.rastdir, because it produces the direction of the line in the resulting
raster (this may be useful not only for modeling preferential flow but
also for getting map of directions for a hiking path, etc.) . It my be worth it
to have Marco look at it and add it as an option or flag into his program
so that we don't have too many modules - it should be simple to implement
Let me know if more explanation is needed for that option or whether I should write
to Marco directly.

Well, that's the question... (now or later).

Yes, we should merge these modules. I would be glad if you could talk to
Marco directly (I think he's not on this list) how to proceed.
Let me know if more explanation is needed for that option or whether I should write
to Marco directly.
Helena
Thanks in advance,
Markus

Well, that's the question... (now or later).
Unless this new code fixes a bug, it should be saved for 5.1 since you
have stated that the socket code was the last feature. Once the release
branch is created, you can add the new code to the MAIN branch.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi,
I have added new code to go into 5.1 in CVS:
grass51/notyetuploaded/
new_makefile_system/ -> from Eric Mitchell
automake
r.carve/ -> from Helena et al.
The program will take the vector stream data,
transform them to raster, and subtracts a
defaultdepth+additionaldepth from the DEM.
v.to.rast2/ -> from Marco Negretti
(This command allows the rasterization of GRASS
vector data. The 'old' method is available: it
is called by the G_system command;
In this function 2 new rasterising methods are available.
-1) dominant unit rastering;
-2) importance method.
)
v.to.rastdir/ -> from Helena et al.
This is a new version of v.to.rast. It has
the following features:
(1) It does not use a temporary file. Results
go directly to the raster map. It does this
by making one or more passes thru the vector
map, rasterizing only a fixed number of rows
(in memory, default 512), writing these rows
to the raster map, and then repeating for the
next set of rows, etc;
(2) The line drawing algorithm is better. The
original version of v.to.rast moved each
line to the nearest grid-cell center
before rasterizing. This version more
nearly reflects the actual path of the
vector lines through the grid cells; and
(3) It works for lat/lon databases as well as
planimetric databases.
I assume the v.to.rast2 and v.to.rastdir should be merged in near future.
Cheers
Markus
