[GRASS5] newbie question, segment selection

hello,
I have used MAPINFO products before.
1. is it possible to select a segment of a road in the map of monitor?
2. is it possible to calculate a segment length in grass 5?

I am not sure what do you need, maybe v.segment (5.7) can help you.
