Well my plan is that when 5.3 can be compiled with shared libraries on all supported platforms, we should make this the default and release it as 5.3.1. Hopefully the changes I made this week should make this possible for Cygwin; it only remains to update it for Mac OS X.
This can be done by removing all the multiply defined symbols (see the make error log on Lorenzo's web site) but I am still kind of putting off
doing the work in the hope that someone will discover a compiler flag for the OS X gcc that allows multiply-defined symbols...
