just received a new NVIDIA Geforce compliant video card.
I had to upgrade the Xserver and activated hardware-openGL
on my linux box.
NVIZ get's *extremely* fast!
However, the window is partly disturbed, a sort of backing store
problem. But all the Mesa examples have the same problem.
Is there someone with experience here? Maybe off-list as
it seems to be a non-GRASS problem.
I am using Xfree4.0.2, Mesa (without mesasoft and glx) on
Linux. If this is running, openGL will get exciting!

You might go to Nvidia's website. I think they have some special
drivers (binary only) and instructions. At least, I've seen several
mentions about this on the debian-user mailing list...

Hi again on this issue,
yes, I got it!
Conclusion:
- get original binary Xfree 4.0.2 from www.xfree.org (.tgz packages
with nice install script)
- in case of NVIDIA: Install additionally their drivers
- install MESA GLU and GLUT (but not GL!!)
-> enjoy high speed NVIZ (maybe 10-800 times faster)
-> enjoy high speed vis5D
-> enjoy high speed Mesa demos
It's great. Note: The Xfree4.0.2 from SuSe is quite instable. I wasted
much time on it, finally replacing it with original Xfree version.
This should work with any 3D-video card as the original Xfree detects
it (if supported).
Cheers
Markus

Markus did you get your problem with the NVIDIA card resolved?
I am getting a new machine and I am considering Elsa Gloria III (NVIDIA Quadro2
Pro)
so I am wondering how it will run with MESA.
Anybody has any experience with this card?
thanks,
Helena

Hello all,
I only subscribed to this list because I'm interested in tracking the development
of 5.0, but I *did* recently set up my nVidia GeForce2 in linux.
In short, the nVidia cards will not work correctly with MESA. nVidia has their own
opengl drivers for linux and it's necessary to use them instead. The nVidia site
has instructions but I found mandrakeuser.org to have better ones. It's a matter
of making a couple of edits to the xconfig-4 file and redirecting the sym links to
point to the nvidia drivers rather than the mesas. I was able to do it only a few
days after first installing linux so I'm sure you'll have no problems.

Helena,
yes and no: Some time it was working, then I obviously over-configured the
Xfree4.0.2, now the openGL/glx stuff is causing problems. So I am back to
slow NVIZ as I don't have the time for further experiments.
I'll give it another try later.
