I have checked out r.line some days ago (head) and I notice
that r.line doesn't output category support... has it always
been like this? I remember it to be working, category support
included. Am I wrong?

As far as I recall it was never supporting categories (while r.poly
does). I also recall that I discussed that with somebody (you?, no David!)
but we didn't got a conclusion about that.
Of course category support would be fine.
