As Frank wrote in his earlier reply, the command-line utilities
(avcimport, avcexport and e00conv) are really the most interesting
components to distribute. Is there really a use for distributing the
library itself (.so and .h)?

What about updating
ogr/ogrsf_frmts/avc/
to avc tools 1.3 and adding the tools there? Then GRASS could simply fetch it
from GDAL/OGR.

Or do all in OGR:
http://bugzilla.remotesensing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=159
? I still didn't find the money to finanze that...

Does GRASS not bundle its own copy of the
library like everybody else does?

No, not yet. That would be another option.

Of course if someone wants to contribute a Makefile.in and configure.in
then I'd be happy to include them in future releases. Or if you could
tell me the minimum requirements for Debian distributions (config
scripts, shared lib, man pages, etc?) then I can have a look, but as
Markus noticed, I can sometimes be slow to get to that kind of stuff.

Oh, that wasn't meant to be offensive, moreover I wanted to stress the
fact that the original developers cannot do all on their own... And not
everybody is familiar with Debian policies in detail.

Markus,

It seems that providing such non-OGR tools would be somewhat out of
scope for OGR so I'm not too keen on it. Anyways, then I might be
expected to provide utility docs, etc.

Don't worry, I didn't feel offended at all... I was kind of making fun of the fact that there were 5 years between the 1.2.0 and 1.3.0 releases of AVCE00... and that without a bit of peer pressure it might have been even longer before the latest fixes were released.

You're right though: the original developers can't dot it all, so contributions are welcome.

Frank,

agreed!

With respect to GRASS I think that the v.in.e00 script directory is also a
bad place to maintain the avc lib and tools.
