[GRASS5] Re: GNU Free Documentation License and maps (Jan-Oliver Wagner)

there was recently some discussion on how to license Free GeoData
on the FreeGIS Mailing List (see the archives,
http://intevation.de/pipermail/freegis-list/2003-August/thread.html).
There was also discussion about this
at the Libre Software Meeting in Metz about 2 month ago.

Thanks. I read the thread concerning maps and GPL. I didn't see any
mention of FDL.

I think the FDL is less suitable though it is not absolutely
inapropriate as an intermediate solution.

What do you think are FDL's flaws?

I think the major flaw is just that data are closer to source code than
to written text. I am sorry, that I can not present you a detailed
analysis. I tried to spend some time on this task, but I did not find
it. That's also the reason why my answer comes so late.

Some data, such as a lookup table, is closely tied to source code and
should be protected as such. However in my opinion, map data is like
JPEG data, which is typically considered documentation. That's why I
think FDL is a good fit for map data, even when in binary (as opposed to
text) form.

on the other hand, for all the vector data you can distinguish between
source code (the preferred format for maintenance) and binary code (the
format for efficient use). There is no such dual aspect for documentation
in the GNU FDL. Because it would not make sense since for
text there are numerous forms for editable format qualified as 'usual'
(almost any except printout :-).

Example: I would consider MrSID format as binary form. If I reveive
a MrSID file of Free Data I want to have the guarantee that there is
some source code form where I could incorporate my changed to update
the MrSID file. This situation is clearified in the GPL, but not in
the FDL.

However, as I already said earlier, it is a complicated topic and
in the end of the day we need a special license for GI because neither
GPL not FDL licenses is perfect for this purpose.

Greetings,

I installed Grass5.0.2 on my computer. And I want to create
some reports of site list. But s.menu isn't included in my
Grass5.0.2. Does anyone know that if s.menu can be used
in Grass5.0.2? Where can I get source code of s.menu?
Is there other command that has similar function to s.menu in
Grass5.0.2?

Thanks a lot.

s.menu has been commented in March 2000 as you can see in the
Changelog of grass:

-----------
2000-03-07 18:05 markus

        * src/CMD/lists/GRASS: commented s.menu as it needs 5.0 update

------------------------

Some time later the code of s.menu has been moved to the folder
"unused". This is the reason why you won't get s.menu when you use a
default version of GRASS 5.0.2. Of course you can compile the code moved
to "unused" but I won't recommand it since Markus surely had some
reason to remove s.menu from officiel grass.

Is there other command that has similar function to s.menu in
Grass5.0.2?

I don't know enough about site commands in grass so I leave the
answer to this question to a more competent person.

Greetings,

As stated in the Changelog: the command is using the pre-5.x sites
format and needs to be partially rewritten.

A good choice is the R/GRASS interface:
http://grass.itc.it/statsgrass/index.html

Like that you get your sites data in R which is a zillion times
more powerful than the old s.menu.
