Re-direct to /dev/null so the manpages at least work on Solaris. Although
now there are no pre-formatted versions on IRIX so it looks like you
can't have everything.

Hello Paul,

does it make sense to distinguish by
uname -m
or so?

I don't know enough about it to say. I think the different Unix versions must have different versions of the man command derived from BSD, System V etc. with slightly different behaviours. But not having a pre-formatted version is not important---it only results in a fraction of a second delay in the man page loading. Having a pre-formatted version that was wrong (e.g. an empty file or just an error message) meant the man pages couldn't be displayed at all and was more serious. But I think that's fixed now.
