This Spring, one of my students tried to run GRASS 5.3 on Windows 98. I don't know if it was older hardware, the OS, or Cygwin's interaction with either, but he had many difficulties. These ended when he switched to a newer machine with Windows XP. I wouldn't advertise that it runs under Win98.
