Perhaps I'm the last to discover this site, but here it is:

The USGS has published the standards for every format in which they publish
data. I've just discovered that the Washington Dept. of Natural Resources
now sells their DEM data in the USGS format rather than ARC/Info .e00
format. Sigh. Guess I have to stop and write a filter so I can use the data.
