I was thinking we should have a world map showing the location of all
GRASS 5.0 developers/contributors. I'll put it together if people want
to send me the following:
NAME(S): Name(s) of person(s) who contributed.
ORGANIZATION: Optional affiliation to an organization.
LATITUDE: Latitude where developer(s) live or work.
LONGITUDE: Longitude where developer(s) live or work.
NEAREST CITY: Name of the nearest major city.
COMMENTS: Any comments you'd like to make. (Please keep them small).
For those contributors on the developers list who do not respond, you'll
be placed somewhere random in a large body of water - "Lost at Sea..."

More fields?:
NUMBER_OF_DEVELOPERS: may be used for mark size on the map
FROM: when he/she started contributing
TO: when she/he stopped
We could add to the CVS repository file DEV_SITES in site_lists format for that.
Fresh maps could be generated for specified date by web server.

We could add to the CVS repository file DEV_SITES in site_lists format for that.
Fresh maps could be generated for specified date by web server.
We could use v.bubble to make the circles and use d.area/HTMLMAP then.
Does anyone have a free political world map (vector)? If so it could be
added to "global" dataset as well.

ESRI has some free GIS Data (including coastlines, country boundaries,
etc...) on their website.

ESRI has some free GIS Data (including coastlines, country boundaries,
etc...) on their website.
If I remember well, ESRI free data may be used only with ESRI products.

Ack, you're right. Sure is a new definition of "free" data. Though, I
can't see how on earth they could enforce these lousy terms...

Radim is right ESRI does not have anything free.
(No free software and no free data.)
You can use the vector data coming with GMT.
It is quite usable and derived from the DCW.

I believe that the NetCDF binned shoreline from GMT comes with political borders. The
political boundaries are derived from the World Data Bank II dataset. I have no idea
how accurate or current the boundaries are.
If you are interested I could extract the boundaries from the dataset and pass them on
as a dig_assci file for import.

I haven't had the time to check the usgs.gov website,
but they probably have one, too.

AFAIK this is the rev2 which is not free data,
but copyrighted by ESRI.
You need rev3, which we have in VPF format on three CDs.
gisdatadepot confuses freedom with zero price and limited usage.

Hi Bob,
it seems that these data (except the tons of VMap3) are the only free
data. If possible, please extract. Then we can update the "global"
dataset as well. Please choose a vector export format which carries
the cats as well (country names).
Thanks

Okay, I've got something of a GRASS 5.0 developers world map. I'm being
lazy and using the xplanet program. Anyway, there are several people I
still don't have coordinates for:
Markus Neteler / U. of Hannover
Bob Covill
Huidae Cho
David D Gray
Andreas Lange
Helena Mitasova / Bill Brown / GMSL / UIUC
CERL
Baylor
I'm sure I've missed a few names.

This is WDB II from UNEP, I have imported it into GRASS and
directly made a tar-ball from it for the "global dataset" from
GRASS sample data page. Above tar-ball *includes* the PROJ* files
and DEFAULT_WINDOW so it should be usable as own location.
DISPLAIMER: I am not responsible for boundaries and country names.

Thanks Markus for the map site. Note that you can change the Lat Long on
the map from decimal to degree/minute/second by clicking the Lat Long
link at the top right. I noticed it was a link and clicked on it and it
gave me the following for Bangkok. Eric, I guess you can update my info
with these coordinates.
Lat: 13° 44' 3" N
Lon: 100° 31' 45" E
