Had EXACTLY the same problem !
Just start GRASS with -text option ! You'll have the console mode in front
of you !
The command is:
grass5 -text
I found it after long hours of patience !!!
As beginner with grass, I'm looking forward to experience more than starting
the soft !
Best regards
Pascal

Objet : [GRASSLIST:1326] LOCATION_NAME not setI wonder if someone can help me.
I have just installed Mandrake 7.2 for the express purpose of learning
Grass. I have also installed Grass5 beta10 and am having a problem
running Grass.Running the command "grass5" gives a response Grass starting....
A partial TCLTK window opens, but nothing else, and the command line
stays with the Grass starting.... Message.I have tried launching Grass by
Grass5 /home/gms/grassdata/leics/PERMANENT
In this instance Grass runs and the full menu bar of TCLTK opens with a
header "TCLTK 3.1 (2000) - location:leics" but if I try and do anything
I get an error message LOCATION_NAME not setI have made my way through a whole collection of g. Commands but all
respond the same way by saying LOCATION_NAME not set.Can anyone one suggest an obvious solution. I should point out that my
experience of Linux is all of three days and I have described the sum
total of my Grass experience. I would however, be very appreciative for
some help in getting started. Many thanks,
Cheers,
Graham S
