Just an up date on my problem. The solution turned out to be dumping GRASS 5.3 & 5.7 and reinstalling. They work fine now.
The problem I am having now is with Grass 5.7. It doesn't seem to be able to see the vector maps.

You have to update topology (run v.build.all).
