[GRASSLIST:3534] which version should be used?

Dear list,

I would like to integrate GRASS at the end of our (nearly or in the near future) operational running processing chain of Meteosat-7 and Meteosat-8 data. Which GRASS version would you suggest for an application like this? The stable version 5.02/3 or the test version 5.3 which might have more features that could be useful for meteorological data analyses? I have nearly no expierience with GRASS. I used other GIS packages before and so I am still a GRASS greenhorn. So I have no idea how evident the differences between 5.0 and 5.3 are. Linux client-server application also mean a constant fight for me. Our work stations run on Suse Linux 8.2 and the server runs on a debian version.
The satellite data will not be the input data source. We have a very a distributed system that delivers all kinds of data. The aim is to merge everything in GRASS. We intend also to add features to GRASS that will be specific for our applications.
I hope you can help me with a good advice or a vote.

Best regards,
Anja

5.3.0 is testing but soon will become stable 5.4.0. So if you wait some time
you can go straight to the new stable rather than using a possibly buggy
version - but nevertheless 5.3.0 is in my experiences reliable enough for
daily usage. And if you encounter a bug, please report it and it will soon
be fixed in the 5.4.0 version.

BTW you can install both GRASS version on your system and use both for the
same database. If 5.0.3 lacks features you need, just start 5.3.0 and give it
a try - if this one is too buggy for your purpose swap back to 5.0.3.

have a look at the announcement

Unfortunately I am not experienced in meteorological data analysis hence I
have no idea which GRASS modules might be useful.

hope you enjoy GRASS, regards Martin

Dear list,

thank you very much for your help.

I will start with version 5.3.

Martin wrote that it is possible to install both versions on my system.
How must the structure look like with the old and the new programm on one
computer? I don't want both systems to get confused by each other -even if
they use the same database.
And right now I cannot do any experiments on the servers.

In the future, when the stable version 5.4. is released is it possible to
plug in and plug out the new and old GRASS version without a complete new
installation?
I planned the whole system a chain of modules. For an update I do not want
to install everything all over again.

Best regards,
Anja

Anja,

What kind of analyses of the Meteosat data do you need to make?

Regards,
Tom

Which operating system are you using? Under Linux you just install both
version and start GRASS 5.0.x with the command "grass5" and the 5.7.0 version
with "grass57" in the shell. Not later "refinement" of the structure is
necessary.
I am not aware that two different GRASS version get confused with each other -
perhaps somebody else can tell you that they definitely can access the same
database (not at the same time) without producing errors.
I am running 5.0.3 and 5.7.0 and both are accessing the same db - so far
without errors.

And right now I cannot do any experiments on the servers.

sorry, not experiences with server based GRASS functionalities.

well, I doubt that there will be some kinds of "upgrade" functions available -
you have to go through the whole installation process again.
But that is not a big deal if you are using the binaries for Linux, just do
"sh name_of_shell_script.sh name_of_GRASS_tar.gz" -- done.

I planned the whole system a chain of modules. For an update I do not want
to install everything all over again.

If you are not in a hurry, wait a couple of .... days? or weeks ... and 5.4.0
will be released, than you don't have to worry about a second installation
until the 5.7.0 branch releases a stable version
