I'm working with my pupils with GRASS (developping several DEMs) and they have problems because v.digit is not as friendly as is MapInfo (as a first module we worked with it)
Is possible to work whit another gnu-program that supports raster images and layers to digitize contours and export them (e.g. as *.dxf) into GRASS?. I tried with The GIMP, but it don't exports in vector format; also tried with QCad, but it has not support for raster layers,...
Can anybody help us?...

I understand. I had the same problem this semester but finally my
students get familiar with v.digit. it just a problem of changing habits
common to win. There are some helpful arguments which I used:
1. GRASS is a free software so they can use it at home computers without
any restrictions
2. There are some much advanced things in GRASS comparing with mapinfo
like polygon topology (direct labeling of polygons) and some programs
which speeding up digitizing like e.g.: v.spag, v.trim
In my opinion, after a little training, digitizing in v.digit is much
faster than mapinfo since all menus are available via 3 buttons only

Check OpenEV. from remotesensing.org There is an module for drawing but
I have never tried this.
I would give the JUMP program suite a try.
It is very nice software written in Java and completely free.
It has tools for creating vector maps that exceed MapInfo in
many ways and can output Shape files or load/save from a
PostGIS SQL database.
However, if you want to use raster layers, you
have to set up an WebGIS server, such as the UNM Map Server
(http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/index.html) and connect to it from JUMP.
JUMP does, unfortunately, not support direct loading of
raster layers from file (as far as I know).

Are you trying the v.digit from 5.0/5.3 or 5.7? The version in 5.7 has a
totally new GUI and is much much much better.
If you are using 5.7, and it still isn't good enough, please add any
suggestions to the wish list so it can improve with time:
Hi,
you can try g3data also, perhaps it is useful for that purpose. I have
necer udsed it.
