[GRASSLIST:4322] Transferring maps to 8 bit

to display grass maps by mapserver, Ithink
I have to transfer grass maps to 8 bit.
Could you give me the information about how I can do that ?

I always use something like

r.mapcalc new_map = 'int(old_map)'

though I think that r.rescale does the same thing.
