[GRASSLIST:4488] grass53 installation

Ian,
  Thanks. You may be right.
I have done another test - I have copied four files from university's
installation location (it works):
mon.start, mon.status, mon.stop and mon.which (my compilation lost these
four files), which are version grass501, to my grass53 /etc/.
The amazing thing here is - now I can run grass53, using four mon.*
files from grass-501! So far only one function failed - I could not set
my region - but can display, zoom in and zoom out.
When I try to set region, I will get this from my tcltkgrass window:

ld.so.1: g.region: fatal: libproj.so.0: Killed

I am not absolutely sure about this, but I think you need to have
administrative permissions (i.e. root) in order to run GRASS and to
install it. I am not a programmer, so I don't know why, but everything
I have seen on this list the last few years indicates that root
privelages are required.

Good luck,
Ian

This is my first time trying to compile grass.
I do not have root permission and I want to install grass53 in my
personal space.
I download grass53 source code to /scratch2/grass/grass-5.3.0/
This is my configure option setting:
./configure --prefix=/afs/isis/depts/geog/course1/grass/
--bindir=/afs/isis/depts/geog/bin
--with-zlib-includes=/afs/isis/pkg/zlib/install/include
--with-zlib-libs=/afs/isis/pkg/zlib/install/lib
--with-jpeg-includes=/afs/isis/pkg/jpeg/include
--with-jpeg-libs=/afs/isis/pkg/jpeg/lib
--with-tiff-includes=/afs/isis/pkg/tiff/include
--with-tiff-libs=/afs/isis/pkg/tiff/lib --without-tiff
--with-png-includes=/afs/isis/pkg/libpng/include
--with-png-libs=/afs/isis/pkg/libpng/lib --without-png --enable-w11
--with-x --without-postgres --without-opengl --without-odbc
--with-fftw-includes=/afs/isis/pkg/fftw/include
--with-fftw-libs=/afs/isis/pkg/fftw/lib
--with-proj-includes=/afs/isis/depts/geog/pkg/proj/include
--with-proj-libs=/afs/isis/depts/geog/pkg/proj/lib
--with-gd-includes=/afs/isis/pkg/gd/include
--with-gd-libs=/afs/isis/pkg/gd/lib
--with-tcltk-includes="/afs/isis/pkg/tcl/include
/afs/isis/pkg/tk/include" --with-tcltk-libs="/afs/isis/pkg/tcl/lib
/afs/isis/pkg/tk/lib"

And result:

I can run grass53, but could not get d.mon start=x0 working for me.
And I found out the reason is - mon.start was not there (under /etc).

I

can only find
mon.list, mon.select and mon.release. Is there any way I can fix this?

Or do I have
to have root access to be able to compile grass53? Any help and
suggestion will be
appreciated. Thanks in advance.
