NEWBIE ALERT!!!!!
I recently compiled and installed grass5.0.1 on a redhat8 machine.
I downloaded a tutorial for grass5.1 (g51test-10.tar.gz).
The tutorial will not run. One of the first lines of the "tour" script
is a v.convert command.
My installation does not have this command. I have rebuilt three times
now and it never shows up. Is is supposed to be there?
If so, is there some way I can compile just this executable, so I can
attempt to find the errors (preventing it from making)?
Thanks,
Stan
Hi Stan,

GRASS 5.0.1 is the currently stable GRASS version,
GRASS 5.1.x is the experimental development version
The tutorial is written for GRASS 5.1 and not for GRASS 5.0.x
you installed. For your version tutorials and sample data are
available as well.
http://grass.itc.it/data.html
So, your installation probabaly is OK. You simply mixed the
versions.

Yes: You mixed 5.0.1 and 5.1.0.
Stable: 5.0.1 (which you have installed)
Experimental: 5.1.0 (the tutorial is written for this version).

No, not in 5.0.1.

No, and you don't need it. In fact you are looking into the wrong
tutorial. Get a 5.0.x related tutorial from here:

I have looked at this site several times over the last year or so and find a 4.0 tutorial and a 5.1 tutorial but not a tutorial for 5.0.x. Have also done numerous dogpile and google searches. Does a tutorial for 5.0.x really exist?

The tutorial at http://grass.itc.it/gdp/tutorial/grass41/
is not 5.0, but, it does get you started (towards the bottom). There's
about 40-50 pages of GIS and the rest is some examples... You'll need
the spearfish data at http://grass.baylor.edu/data.html
Hope this helps...
