[GRASSLIST:5932] On Debian

I tried to install GRASS on debian (Testing), on following grass
website, which points to Debian GIS, I put required lines in
apt/sources.list

===================================================
deb http://pkg-grass.alioth.debian.org/debian-gis testing main non-free
contrib
deb-src http://pkg-grass.alioth.debian.org/debian-gis testing
main non-free contrib

deb file:/home/software/debian sarge packages

On "apt-get update", it says "file Packages" not found. How I can use
apt-get to install Grass6.0 on Debian.

If I try source, it says "zlib" header file not found. And I could not
find package to be installed from 15 CDs of Debian Testing.

Please give me pointer to enable me to install it on Debian. GRASS5.2 is
there on CDs, which I could install easily.

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

You have to change "testing" to "unstable"... doing that apt-get will
work, and install GRASS 6.0 beta 2, ok?

Why do you need this last line ? The first two are enough to get the debian
packages.

See http://pkg-grass.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?DebianGisRepository for
exact instructions, including for pinning to make sure that you get the
packages from DebianGIS and not from the main Debian repository.

On "apt-get update", it says "file Packages" not found.

This is due to the last line...

The easiest thing to do is to use the grass packages coming from Sid !
They are the same as the one from pkg-grass.alioth.debian.org.

Using AptPreferences you will stay on sarge but may use grass packages
from Sid

I think there are no testing-packages on alioth.
you should user unstable instead of testing in /etc/apt/source.list

This should allow apt-get update to find the correct file.

recently I heard that GRASS filtered into sarge officially, so an
apt-get install grass should do (untested).

Check headers for GnuPG Key!
http://www.gdf-hannover.de

Yes, but this way you can't get the newest stuff (qgis-grass-plugin,
libgdal1-grass).
All the best.
