[GRASSLIST:6304] mask in GRASS60

HI,
can anyone tell me how to create a mask in GRASS 6.0?
have I to use r.mapcalc? I've tried with this command, but I'm afraid I wrong
something writing..... what is the right sintax?

r.mapcalc MASK=map
or
g.copy map,MASK
or
g.rename map,MASK
or
...
