Can anyone tell me at which website I can download a DEM (Gauteng, South
Africa) which can be interpreted by GRASS 6?

Search the list archive for "srtm" DEM, might be that's what you need.

Try SRTM (r.in.srtm) or GTOPO30 (r.in.gdal) data sets.

I have been downloading the CGIAR DEMs. They are the 90m SRTM dems but re-interpreted and the holes have been filled in. So far they look really good. Just download the ArcInfo ASCII files.
