[GRASSLIST:8273] masking a portion of a raster layer "by hand"

Does anyone know of a way to create a mask for a raster layer using the mouse? I'd like to mask off areas of interest in raster layers that are determined by visual observation.

possibilities:
- QGIS Grass digit plugin to digitise your mask polygon, v.to.rast
- v.digit, v.to.rast
- r.digit

Try r.digit to make a raster by hand. Then name that raster MASK.

What happens if a big asteroid hits Earth? Judging from realistic simulations involving a sledge hammer and a common laboratory frog, we can assume it will be pretty bad.

Export the raster to an image format, load it into an image editing
program which supports layers (e.g. GIMP), draw the mask on a new
layer, save it as a separate image and import it.
