[GRASSLIST:8516] troubleshooting Cygwin and Grass 6 installation

Dear Grass users,

Could someone help me with CYGwin and GRASS 6 installation under Windows XP? I am having a hard time to install Grass and the web tutorials seem to be of no help to overcome specifics…

When trying to restart the installation process using CYGwin setup, following the step “choose a download site” and after adding http:/geni.ath.cx/ to the list and selecting it together with another mirror site, I am getting the following error messages:

Cygwin Setup:
Can’t open http:/geni.ath.cx/grass/setup.bz2 for reading: Invalid argument

Cygwin Setup:
Unable to get setup.ini from http:/geni.ath.cx/grass

Many thanks in advance for any help. Would appreciate as well if someone has written an alternative step by step installation “guide” under Windows XP and could share it…

Paulo

I am running Grass 6.1.cvs on Cygwin/Windows XP. I once had a similar problem with the cygwin install. This was because I added only:

http://geni.ath.cx

as a download site. I should have added it as:

http://geni.ath.cx/grass

Although once the download site is added, you won't see the "/grass" part on the list. I don't know if this is the problem you are having. I didn't have to follow any special instructions to get things to work under XP.

In the past, I have also installed the Grass files manually, after installing Cygwin only. The instructions for this are under the header "Alternative installation for 6.1 CVS" on http://geni.ath.cx/grass.html. This bypasses the <http://geni.ath.cx/grass> download site completely -- you just need to connect to one of the sites that has the base Cygwin files. Of course, then you'll be running the CVS version, and not the release version. But that shouldn't be a problem.

I found the steps on this website to be helpful when I was setting up
Cygwin/Grass 6. The website is titled "WinGrass for the Green".

Hope it helps.

Dear Grass users,

Could someone help me with CYGwin and GRASS 6 installation under Windows XP?

Paulo,

Dear Eva,

thanks a lot.

It seems I have installed Grass 6.1 cvs and also the 6.0 (geni/ath/cx seems to be working again!).
I even managed to start up Grass 6.1 ( and also the 6.0). But in both situations I am getting the following messages:

Warning: Invalid Database
Warning: Invalid database. Finding first valid directory in parent tree.

After OKing the warning message and trying the browse button (both versions) to set the directory where I have saved already the “spearfish57” (…/database/) I am getting the following message, no matter what:

Application error
Error: couldn’t change working directory to “./database”: no such file or directory.

(!?)

Could you (or maybe some other user ) still help?

Thank you very much once again in advance for your attention and patience…

I may not be helpful here. But I have some ideas:

1) Grass 6.1.cvs and 6.0 do not like to live together on the same machine. I have only had problems when I have had both versions installed. You might have to completely clear out your Grass installation, and start again with just one version of Grass.

2) the spearfish data should be in a folder within your home directory. For example,

C:\cygwin\home\Eva\spearfish60

You can even uncompress the spearfish_grass60data.tar.gz file using WinZip, which will create the spearfish60 directory, which you can then drag and drop into your home directory using Windows (because the Cygwin command line interface can be a mystery to us Windows users).

you should follow the white rabbit -- http://www.gdf-hannover.de/media.php?id=7&lg=en in this case

it is always better to create your GRASS Database directory in your home
direcotry, the spearfish60 directory should go into "grassdata"
directory in your HOME directory:

$ mkdir grassdata
$ cd grassdata
$ tar -xvzf /where/ever/you/have/spearfish_grass60data.tar.gz
$ cd ..
$ grass61

results into

C:\cygwin\home\Eva\grassdata\spearfish60
