Help importing TM imagery

Could someone point me in the right direction. I have some LANDSAT TM
imagery as *.bip files with *.hdr files already projected to UTM coords.
I see modules like i.tape.tm, but these are in the file system already
and I'd rather not have to create a temporary x,y LOCATION to import
them.

am I right that the last GRASS user's conference
was 1996 at Santa Fe, New Mexico?

The forthcoming planned user conference, would that be
10th or 11th?
                                                                                
The latest conference I know was 9th in 1994 at Reston.
