help w/ dem extract

I can use some help.
I've been trying to extract some DEM data from a file and I keep
getting errors. The data comes from a USGS tape, was downloaded
onto a prime and ftp'd to my home directory. I have been trying to
use m.dem.extract and after getting the reagion info and first header
for the quad, I get the fallowing problem:
For the first 53 files I get 5 messages saying "Warning unexpectid
C-type record encountered (see GRASS4.1 manual for detailes) Trying
to recover . . ."
I then get the same message with "OK! Recovered!" at the end.
Then I see header type info fallowed by "(outside current
geographical region)"
This this all flashes by very quickly for the 53 'files'.
It then reads 'end of records, Reading profile 3 of 386, Error: '
Next I get the grass prompt.

If I try to start m.dem.extract from 'file 54' I get exact same things
except with no header type info and 'outside current geo. region'
message.
There seems to be no output.
  Any ideas? Thanks!!!

In info.grass.user you write:

Please ftp the data to me.
You can put it on moon.cecer.army.mil (grass/incoming) directoy.
Send me email when it's there.
