Central Washington University is a largely residential campus located in
the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, approximately 100 miles ESE of
Seattle. It offers baccalaureate degrees in many disciplines and has a
number of masters programs as well. Ellensburg is a town of approximately
14,000 people, including the university population, surrounded by a large
area of irrigated agriculture dominated by production of corn, high quality
hay, beef cattle, and wheat. Topics for local field investigation
associated with the Yakima River system abound--as do recreational
opportunities.
The Department of Geography and Land Studies has a distinguished tradition
of high quality instruction, public service, and leadership within the
university. We emphasize the global view of phenomena and its role in
preparing students to manage land, resources, and environments. We are a
major supporting department for the Resource Management masters degree
program and the university's GIS Laboratory (housed in the same building as
the department). The last five years have seen substantial growth in
numbers of geography majors and resource management graduate students--the
latter program is now the fourth largest of fourteen graduate programs at
CWU. We have just instituted a grant-funded program offering resource
management graduate work to Native American students.
All department members teach both introductory and upper division courses,
advise students, and serve on committees. Most teach graduate courses.
