i.class with multiple regions?

This question has been put to the list by two of my students:

In grass 4.0 the i.class command seems not to allow a guided
classification of satellite imagery on the basis of more than
one contiguous region. We are aware that the r.le suite of
tools does provide the possibility of indicating more than one
region, but would like to know if the same thing can be done
in the regular 4.0 toolbox (and if so, how). Also, have the
r.le tools been incorporated in Grass 4.1 or are they still
contribs?
