Importing compressed TIFF files

Hello,

I wish to import a standard TIFF 6.0 8-bit color pallette packbit compressed
file into GRASS. I pulled the r.in.tiff_sun file off the moon and attempted
to pull this into GRASS. The r.in.tiff_sun did not work with this file, it
errored out.

Does anyone know how to read this type of compressed file directly into GRASS
or through an intermediate program? There is also a TIFF World File which
contains the affine transformation coordinates needed to allow ERDAS,
ArcInfo, and ArcView to treat the .tif file as a geo-referenced raster image.
I wish to create a cellhd file that will give the imported TIFF image
geo-references.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Louis
Try converting the TIFF file to uncompressed, using a tool such as XV or
pbmplus. I've had bad luck with compressed TIFF files and r.in.tiff.
