A basic GRASS question -- how do I clean up our GRASS installation to
save disk space? Is there a "make clean" I can do? Can I remove directories
and files relating to things I don't use (like xgrass) without hurting
anything?

yes, you may 'rm -rf' xgrass.
Another cleanup operation may be:
'find appropriate_dir -name "OBJ*" -exec -rm -rf {} \; -prune'
This deletes all object files.
'gzip -r appropriate_dir' is also good if your installation is
fairly stable (gzip is available from prep.ai.mit.edu and GNU
mirrors).
