"trapecoid (sp?)" --> trapezoid
Perhaps you could use the GMT program grdproject to convert from one of
the stereographic projections to an x,y (rectangular) projection.
I know it works for gtopo30 (use grdraster to get the grid, then grdproject,
then grdreformat to make a new rasterfile.
