length of roads in an area

Hi, Eric.
  I have a script called r.length that takes into account vertical/horizontal
cells versus diagonal cells and their lengths and calculates their distances.
Accuracy is dependent on cell resolution- the lower the better. Let me know if
you're interested in it. Rick

I am wondering if there is any method to determine the length of a number of
road segments (total length) within a given area (vector length within raster
area). I can do a v.to.rast on the roads and run r.report, but this is not
ideal. Any ideas?
