monitor locking process error

Dear Grass-users,

Have installed grass4.1.5 including update patch1 and Linux slackware3
with kernel 1.2.13 in umsdos mode on a Compaq Presario 5522
after splitting my harddisk with fips.Run win95 on the other part.
Video chip set S3-Trio64
Everything seems fine exept:
When I try d.mon start=x0 or d.mon select=x0 ,a monitor comes up but
then the following message:

$:Error - Could not complete locking process for monitor <x0>
Lockfile is /usr/local/grass/locks/darkstar/mon.4721494

Being a total novice to both Linux and Grass Im at a loss at this one.
Suspect a problem with memory or initab file.Help Help Help.....

Check permissions of the file! and the subdirectories! should be writable
so that starting a monitor will remove the file!
